Mini Octopus

This Mini Octopus is only 4cm tall.

(This is my first attempt at publicly posting a pattern for others to use and hopefully understand. If you have any question or corrections please let me know as I will greatly appreciate any feedback! Also if you do try out this pattern, please post a picture as I will love to see your recreations)

You will need:

  • 3mm crochet hook (Can use 4mm if preferred)
  • Yarn needle
  • Yarn (approx 10g or 30m)
  • Soft toy filling
  • 4mm safety eyes or a small piece of black yarn and use a french knot for the eyes.

Stitches and abbreviations used:

(I am from England but use US crochet terms)
  • MC - Magic circle/ring
  • Ch - Chain
  • SC - Single crochet
  • Inc - Increase stitch (2 single crochets into one stitch)
  • Dec - Decrease stitch (single crochet 2 stitches together)
  • HDC - Half double crochet
  • DC - Double crochet
  • ST - Stitch
  • FLO - Front loop only
  • BLO - Back loop only
  • SLST - Slip stitch
  • FO - finish off
Other things to note....

  • This is worked in continuous rounds. It is helpful to use a stitch marker to keep track
  • The number in ( ) at the end of each round indicates the total stitch count for that round
  • *  * indicates repeated series of stitches
  • Use invisible decreases for a neater finished product
  • Stitches in [ ]  are worked into one stitch

Main body (base piece):
  1. MC with 6 st (6)
  2. *Inc* (12)    - Work the starting yarn tail into this round to hide it
  3. *1sc, Inc* (18)
  4. *2sc, Inc* (24)
  5. 24sc (24)
  6. 24sc (24)
  7. 24sc (24)
  8. 24sc (24)
  9. 24sc (24)
  10. *2sc, Dec* (18)
  11. *1sc, Dec* (12)
  12. FLO for whole round - *Inc* (24)
  13. (Repeat steps 1-3 below 8 times to create the legs)
    1. 1sc into round, ch 10, turn.
    2. Working along the chain, 3sc, 2hdc, 3dc, 1sc
    3. skip 1 st on the base piece, 1sc into the next st on base piece
  14. Slst all the way round the edge, using outer loops when stitching on the back of the chain. This is optional but will help the legs to be less wild!
  15. FO

Add stuffing and safety eyes to main body

Bottom:
  1. MC with 6st (6)
  2. *Inc* (12)
  3. Join to main body with 1sc through both this piece and the BLO of round 12 above. (12). This will seal the octopus closes so make sure you have added all the stuffing required and keep adding until last st. You can sew together instead of crocheting together if you would prefer.
  4. FO, hide yarn tails in body

Thank you for reading. If you have tried this pattern, please let me know. Would love to hear from you even if it is just to say you have or to give me some feedback on how it turned out for you. Any questions, feel free to ask.
