Mini Hedgehog

This Mini Hedgehog is easy to make. Adding the 'spikes' is what takes most of the time, apart from that he is very quick to make.

If you have any question or corrections please let me know as I will greatly appreciate any feedback! Also if you do try out this pattern, please post a picture as I will love to see your recreations.

You will need:

  • 3mm crochet hook (Can use 4mm if preferred)
  • Yarn needle
  • Yarn (approx 25g or 70m)
  • Soft toy filling
  • 4mm safety eyes

Stitches and abbreviations used:

(I am from England but use US crochet terms)
  • MC - Magic circle/ring
  • SC - Single crochet
  • Inc - Increase stitch (2 single crochets into one stitch)
  • Dec - Decrease stitch (single crochet 2 stitches together)
  • DC - Double crochet
  • BLO - Back loop only
  • ST - Stitch
  • SLST - Slip stitch
  • FO - finish off
Other things to note....

  • This is worked in continuous rounds. It is helpful to use a stitch marker to keep track
  • The number in ( ) at the end of each round indicates the total stitch count for that round
  • *  * indicates repeated series of stitches
  • Use invisible decreases for a neater finished product
  • Stitches in [ ]  are worked into one stitch

Face and body:
  1. starting with light brown - MC (4)

  10. 24sc (24) - add safety eyes here for ease of securing the backs. Note his nose is made at the end by just sewing black yarn
  11. change to dark brown - 24sc (24)

  26. BLO - *1sc, dec* (12)
  27. BLO - *dec* (6)
  28. FO and close. Do not stuff too full as his 'spikes' will act as stuffing too.

Spikes/fur (dark brown):
I used a smaller hook here for ease but you can use one hook throughout if that is what you have/prefer.
These stitches are worked through the Front loops left over from rows 12-27 of the body.
  • Join yarn to body and slst to secure.
  • *2sc in first st, 4dc into the next st* repeat this until you get to the underneath (belly) and slst along those stitches. This is optional but will give him a flatter belly and sit better.
  • Do every stitch on the first three rows, then do alternate rows (this will be easier to stitch and less bulky)
  • When 4 rows are left, do not skip any rows, do the stitches continually all around the body for all four rows. (it does get a little fiddly towards the end)
  • slst and hide yarn tail in body

Ears x2 (light brown):
  1. MC (4)
  2. 1sc to join circle and FO. Leave yarn tail to sew to body.

Thank you for reading. If you have tried this pattern, please let me know. Would love to hear from you even if it is just to say you have or to give me some feedback on how it turned out for you. Any questions, feel free to ask.
